Njeri lion
Since her mammoth operation to remove a melanoma from the tip of her ear, Njeri is now back on exhibit with her sister Shinyanga and male Lion, Jasiri and doing really well. The wound has now healed and her fur is gradually growing over the area.
Following her operation Zoo veterinarian, Michelle Campbell sent blood samples, ear tissue and an aspiration from the lymphnods to a pathologist to determine whether the cancer had spread further than her ear, or whether removing the ear tissue had removed all the cancer. It was a nervous wait for both veterinarians and zoo keepers but when the results finally arrived it was all positive for Njeri who got the all clear on every test.
The future for Njeri is now looking bright, thanks to early detection from the keepers and the best possible treatment and care from the Zoo's veterinarians.
Keepers will continue to monitor Njeri closely to ensure the cancer does not return. Njeri will also continue to have an annual health check where veterinarians will closely look and feel her body to detect any signs of abnormal lumps and bumps that may suggest the cancer has returned.
