Zebra Move

The new male zebra has settled into Taronga Zoo. Zebra keeper Adam said that “the two boys get along great and the new, younger male is starting to challenge the adult male for his position, as expected”.

Taronga Zebra Shani moved from Taronga to Werribee as part of a regional breeding program for the species. It is hoped she will go on to have her own foals and introduce a new bloodline to the region. Shani is a Plains Zebra and was born at Tarounga Western Plains Zoo (TWPZ) approx. five years ago.

She was the first offspring of TWPZ’s breeding female Kampala and her birth was very significant as there are few breeding zebra in the region with only 2 or 3 Zebra foals born every year in Australasia.

Plains Zebras are found in east, south west and southern Africa. They graze on open plains and  their stripes are confusing to lions and hyenas which hunt them. They are threatened due to habitat loss and hunting.
