Series 4 Episode 6

A Black Rhino calf is born at Taronga Western Plains Zoo as staff at Taronga’s Wildlife hospital work to save two orphaned Powerful Owl chicks. A seal undergoes cataract surgery at Sea World while Adelaide Zoo awaits the arrival of some very special Giant Pandas.

Happy the Common Hippo

Happy, our Common Hippo recovered from his tusk trimming procedure quite quickly and is doing well back in his lake.

His tusks no longer bother him like they use to when they were long which is a relief not only for Happy but for his dedicated zoo keepers as well.

These animals have approximately 38-40 teeth and their lower canines grow into long tusks, which are used as weapons, so every now and again it is imperative to file down Happy’s tusks which also makes it easier for him to feed.

Ntombi the Giraffe

After a long journey by boat from Auckland to Sydney and then by road from Sydney to Dubbo, Giraffe pair, Ntombi and travel partner Forrest arrived at Taronga Western Plains Zoo.  After travelling five days due to a delay because of the high seas, the pair were immediately unloaded into the night yards once they arrived in Dubbo.
